A blue badge holder has accused a Northfleet skatepark of discrimination after allegedly being told she was “not disabled enough” to park in a disabled space.

Leigh Bobbett, 33, told News Shopper how a manager at Cyclopark in Northfleet questioned her disability when she left the skatepark with her family after an evening out for her son’s birthday last night.

Mrs Bobbett, who suffers from fibromyalgia which can leave her bedbound, said she was forced to show the manager her blue badge after he followed her out to the disabled space she had parked in.

“My disabled badge was clearly in the window but I grabbed it and showed it to him – it has my photo on it.

“But he told me that, because I can walk a few metres I wasn’t disabled enough and that I should park at the back of the car park.

“He said the spaces at the front should be left for wheelchair users,” the mum, who is also awaiting a diagnosis for multiple sclerosis, claimed.

Mrs Bobbett often needs to use a wheelchair as a result of her condition, which can leave her in excruciating pain.

“It’s a widespread pain, all over your body and you can’t stop it, no matter what you do. I’m on a lot of medication,” she told News Shopper.

She added she had been able to walk a short distance yesterday evening because she had rested up all day for her son’s birthday.

“I tried to say to the manager that I was having a good day because when I have bad days, I’m bedbound.”

The mum admitted she swore at the manager after he questioned her disability, explaining she was so gobsmacked by his behaviour she did not know how to respond.

“He’s a manager. He should be more clued up than most. He just felt like picking on someone.

“It’s just crazy. I’m so shocked a place like that could do that to a customer.

“The approach was awful. We felt so intimidated.”

Mrs Bobbett told News Shopper she is concerned about being judged using the blue badge in future.

“Disability isn’t visible at all times. More and more disabilities are not visible nowadays. You can’t just discriminate against people.”

A Cyclopark spokesman said: "Cyclopark is a charity that is proud of its work in the local community and its customer service.

"Whilst we have not received any official complaints, we are aware of the comments on social media and are investigating with the relevant staff."
