A Bromley man has described the "goosebumps moment" a heartbroken former Thomas Cook air hostess delivered an emotional announcement on board a repatriation flight from Tenerife.

"Even though we have been abandoned by our company we will not abandon you our loyal customers," a brave mum-of-two told holiday goers travelling home to Stansted.

Grateful passengers responded by organising a whip-round for the devastated cabin crew left jobless after the holiday firm's collapse.

Alex Hall, 32, from Bromley, filmed the powerful speech and said the atmosphere was "indescribable" during the tannoy statement.

"It was so raw and emotional," Alex, who had spent a week abroad with his partner, told News Shopper after the flight from Tenerife South Airport on Friday (September 27) evening.

"You could cut the tension with a knife."

The air hostess told passengers she had worked for Thomas Cook for 13 years and was on holiday in Turkey when the news broke.

She said: "I have given 13 years of my life to Thomas Cook and I met my husband here and on Monday we both lost our jobs overnight just like that and with two young children to support."

The axed worker, intent on helping passengers return home, was filmed saying she was unsure if she would be paid for her repatriation efforts.

She received a round of applause after her heartfelt speech to passengers waiting to go home after the flight was delayed by over three hours.

"It’s an incredibly hard time for us," she added to those on board. "We are not able to provide you with a lot, just a cup of tea, coffee and a muffin.

"But we promise to get your home safe and sound and see this through to the very end."

Alex was "blown away" by the professionalism of staff and said they deserved recognition.

"The whole way they staff were comforting each other," Alex said. "They were in bits. They remained so professional even though you could see how devastating it was.

"I want to give them more coverage to show our gratitude."
