Police are investigating another homophobic attack near Blackheath Common.

Unfortunately, the area has become notorious for homophobic assaults, with News Shopper previously reporting on a 36-year-old man being strangled and beaten.

The incident on Vanbrugh Park Road was described by police as motivated by homophobia.

The victim was walking on Blackheath Common in an area known as Blackheath Dip when he was beaten by a group of around five males, and possibly a female.

The police are now investigating a similar attack that happened on September 15 at around 4am near Kidbrooke Park Road.

Four men approached the victim, who is aged in his 20s, before assaulting him and stealing his phone.

Homophobic comments were made towards the victim during the horrific ordeal.

The victim was seen by the London Ambulance Service but did not require hospital treatment.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call 101 quoting reference Cad 1429/15Sep or Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111.

MP Matthew Pennycook recently tweeted about the attacks.

He said: "Another assault at the Blackheath Dips last night. Given the history of incidents in this location, including targeted homophobic hate crimes, I urge people visiting the area to exercise caution. The authorities are exploring what more can be done to tackle this serious problem."

The council is now asking for anyone who might have information to contact the relevant authorities.

Cllr Jackie Smith, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Community Safety, said: “It is appalling and shocking when any attack like this happens.

"We pride ourselves on being an inclusive borough and are supporting the police. We would call on anyone who may have seen or heard anything to come forward so that the people responsible can be found and brought to justice.

"The Council works with a range of partners, including LGBTQ+ charities like METRO and Galop to raise awareness, provide personal safety advice and encourage people to report any incidents.”

Metro, a charity which promotes equality and diversity across London and the South East, has recently been placing posters around the Common.

A poster seen by News Shopper says: "We have received reports that gay/bi men are being violently attacked in the area of Blackheath Dips."

They then give all the different contact details someone might need as a victim or if anyone has witnessed an attack.
