A husky with no eyes returned home to Dartford with a medal and a trophy after her owner made a "spur of the moment" decision to enter her into a competition.

Kevin Taylor, 50, was strolling through the Kent Showground in Detling with his pet Blossom when he decided to enter a over 40s handling competition.

He has owned Blossom ever since taking her in from a rescue shelter eight years ago when she was six months old.

Blossom unfortunately developed Glaucoma and Kevin was forced to make the heartbreaking decision last year to have her eyes removed.

"It was a really awful choice to make," Kevin told News Shopper. "She was seven at the time, but she had to have them out."

Brave Blossom’s senses took over and she now reacts to commands from Kevin.

His commands prompt the trusting dog to follow instructions such as to turn left and right or lift her paw when approaching steps.

The pair were enjoying Paws in the Park on Sunday (September 15) when Kevin decided to enter a handling competition for a "bit of fun".

Unlikely winner Blossom unbelievably finished first despite competing with sighted dogs before claiming the Best In Show award in the grand final for handling.

"I can still hardly believe it," Kevin laughed. "It was pretty incredible. It is amazing how the senses take over.

"I’m still amazed she won."

Kevin has no idea whether we will see Blossom in future competitions but said he may bring her along to Paws in the Park again next year.
