A fridge freezer thought to be on a recall list is believed to have caused a flat fire on Avonley Road in New Cross.

Officers were called on August 18 at 11.41pm to reports of a flat fire.

Half of the second floor flat was damaged by fire.

A woman and two children left the affected flat before the Brigade arrived.

Another 18 people self evacuated from neighbouring flats while other residents stayed inside their unaffected flats. Thankfully there was no injuries.

London Fire Brigade spokesman said:“Most fires, where white goods are the source of ignition, are not down to anything you've done. The most important thing you can do to make sure you're safe is to regularly check your appliances haven't been recalled. This can be more difficult than it sounds. At the moment, you need to check the Government's product recall site, the manufacturer's website or Electrical Safety First's recall register.

“We want to see one single, publicly accessible register of product recalls and better publicity by manufactures when there is a known fault.”

Fire crews from New Cross, Old Kent Road, Deptford and Peckham fire stations were at the scene.
