Firefighters remained at the scene of a major barn fire which burned through the night.

Crews warned earlier there was still a risk of drifting smoke and for people to be aware.

The barn full of hay bales went up in flames yesterday.

Around 25 firefighters battled the blaze at Abbotsbury since the morning.

The barn, just past Rodden Row on the B3157, contained hay bales.

These have been removed from the barn and are being turned over in a nearby field which will allow them to burn out - a process that could take a couple of days.

A one-way system was in place just after the Swan Inn, but the road was closed around noon from the Kings Arms in Portesham to the bottom of Abbotsbury Hill.

It remained closed overnight.

Fire crews remained at the scene overnight and left at about 11am today, Saturday.

The situation has now been left with the farmer, although a crew from Bridport will reinspect the scene later.

Thick plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from the site for miles around and residents in the area were advised to keep windows and doors closed.

Crews from Weymouth, Dorchester and a specialist water carrier from Bridport were on-site as they continued to work to extinguish the fire, which broke shortly before 9am.

No injuries have been reported and it is not yet known how the fire started.

Abbotsbury Children's Farm delayed its opening times yesterday morning due to the fire and smoke, but is now open.
