Five callouts in five days - it's been a dramatic first week of the summer holidays for the coastguard.

A man injured both his legs after falling eight metres from cliffs at Black Ven, near Charmouth.

Emergency services, including the coastguard helicopter, were called on Thursday afternoon.

Police, paramedics, the HART Team (Hazardous Area Response), Lyme Regis coastguard and the coastguard rescue helicopter were already responding to the incident when officers from West Bay arrived on scene to help set up a helicopter landing site so the helicopter could land after it had dropped its winch-man paramedic to the casualty.

Once the man had been reached, the helicopter took off again to collect the casualty and take him to Dorset County Hospital for onward care and treatment.

A spokesman for West Bay Coastguard Rescue Team said: "We wish the casualty a speedy recovery. Thanks goes out to the general public who patiently waited while areas were closed off so we could safely land the helicopter.

It was the second incident of the day and the fifth in just five days.

Earlier on Thursday, beachgoers were given advice by the coastguard after they set up for their day at the beach beneath East Cliff at West Bay.

Officers were alerted by lifeguards, who reported people putting themselves at risk under the cliff.

Coastguards and lifeguards carried out foot patrols down East Beach and gave safety advice to a number of people.

A 15ft fishing boat broke down off West Bexington on Wednesday morning. The three men managed to make their way ashore after finding themselves in the water. Coastguards and the RNLI Lyme Regis Lifeboat responded, and found there were no injuries.

The lifeboat was able to re-float the boat and tow it to West Bay Harbour and the three men were then given a lift back to West Bay. They were well-equipped for their trip, were wearing life jackets and had a marine VHF radio.

And, on Tuesday, beachgoers were again seen endangering themselves beneath East Cliff at West Bay.

Coastguards made their way to the beach on Tuesday afternoon but were later stood down.

Three men were also swept overboard by a wave at St. Gabriel’s Steps, near Golden Cap, on Friday. You can read the full story

The spokesman added: "This week we have seen incidents on the cliffs, as well as incidents out at sea.

Both of the incidents at sea demonstrate the importance of going properly equipped and wearing lifejackets, as accidents can happen at any time and without warning.

"We remind people not to put themselves at risk underneath the cliffs and ask people not to climb the cliffs or mud flows when hunting for fossils.

"Stay safe on the coast this summer, but If you find yourself in difficulty, or if you see something which gives you cause for concern then dial 99 and ask for the coastguard."
