A fundraiser has been launched after a patch of astroturf was stolen from a Woolwich school.

Cardwell Primary School is based near Woolwich Docklands and a lot of people spent a lot of time and effort raising money for the turf.

A letter written to the parents by executive headteacher, Lisa Lazell said: "As a school community we are devastated by such events. The area is used daily for learning, playing, storytime and clubs.

"You will know that school budgets are very tight and we use them wisely as out children deserve an outstanding education."

The astroturf was only laid last summer after years of saving to provide the children with a new safe play area.

Monica McQueen who started the GoFundMe told News Shopper: "I hope to raise money over the summer holidays so the children can arrive back at school able to once again play in their Garden."

Monica says that after talking to a few people, she believes she knows who the thief is and has handed all information to the police, but until then, the fundraiser is now live for anyone to donate to.

The school is asking parents and the wider community to be vigilant and report anything suspicious to the school or police to prevent further damage to the school.
