A man who was caught after he exposed himself to women on multiple occasions in south east London has been sentenced.

Godwin Bassey, 35 of Chesterfield Way, Peckham was sentenced to a two-year Community Order at Inner London Crown Court on July 26.

He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years.

Bassey had earlier pleaded guilty to seven counts of exposure and one count of assault with intent to resist arrest at the same court on May 31.

Eleven other offences of exposure were taken into consideration.

Bassey’s offences occurred in the New Cross and Peckham areas across an 11-month period.

He would target lone women or women walking in pairs and often used parked cars to hide behind before pouncing on them. Bassey would expose himself; when challenged he would walk or run from the scene.

Bassey was arrested in Brimmington Park, on February 18 following a proactive policing operation by officers from Central South CID who had linked the series of similar offences. When apprehended, Bassey became violent and injured several officers during the ensuing struggle, with one officer suffering a laceration to her head and ligament damage to her hand.

Detective Constable Sandy Peters, of the South Area Command Unit, said: “Bassey targeted vulnerable, lone women for his own sexual gratification, striking fear into his victims.

“He was caught after a long and complex police investigation and I would like to thank all those victims who came forward and showed great resilience to support us throughout the investigation.

“I would also like to thank my colleagues, several of whom were injured during arresting Bassey, who played an integral part in his arrest and conviction.

“Given the volume of his offending there may well be other victims of Bassey who have yet to come forward."
