A concerned grandad has blasted an “extremely dangerous” playground in Forest Hill after his seven-year-old granddaughter was injured on the climbing frame.

Peter Vining, 75, took Lily and her brother, two-year-old Oscar to the Horniman Triangle Play Area on Sunday to have a picnic and play in the playground.

However, their day out was ruined when Lily scratched her thigh on one of the climbing frames.

“Lily stopped and pointed at it and said ‘look at that Grandad’,” Mr Vining explained.

Mr Vining, who was visiting his family from West Sussex, looked closer at the corner of the frame to see bare metal wires exposed where the rope had come away.

“All one side had come away from its mounting.

“Fortunately, Lily just brushed the frame but it’s incredibly dangerous. If a child falls against it, it could rip their legs apart,” the worried grandad told News Shopper.

He added the sandpit in the playground, which was “rotting and breaking away” was taped off so poorly that children could easily still run into it.

“Cones have been placed with tape but this went long ago and the whole area is dangerous,” Mr Vining described.

In shock at the state of the playground, Mr Vining warned parents to be wary of the equipment before calling the emergency phone number on the park’s board – only to be met with a recorded message.

“The message said to go on the website because the number was not monitored,” he told News Shopper.

He was then directed to Lewisham Council’s website to make a complaint, but received an error message when he tried to report the playground for a second time.

When contacted by News Shopper, a Lewisham Council spokesman said the Council was looking into the incident.
