Swanley Town Council have officially declared war on abandoned supermarket trolleys which have seemingly been littering the town's streets.

Officials from the town authority have been given special authorisation from Sevenoaks District Council to issue charges on offending stores which have allowed shoppers to remove the trolleys from the store, which ultimately end up being left on pathways and other areas.

The town council has also tried to encourage all stores in the town to fit magnetic locks to their trollies to prevent them being taken away.

However according to the local council, only the nearby Asda have complied with their request.

Speaking on the rash action being taken, CEO of Swanley Town Council Steve Nash said: "It’s time the stores were made more accountable for their lack of action in preventing what is tantamount to littering.

"I hope this will galvanise them into action."

Once the District Council have adopted this power there will be a three month consultation with the stores advising them of the charges and how it will apply to them.

The hope is that in the face o on-going charges the stores will "see the sense" of installing the magnetic system at a one off cost.
