It's not just the England women's football team making waves this summer as girls in Bexley were crowned national champions last month.

Bexley Girls District football team became the first girls’ team from the borough to win an English championship.

They also made history by being the first Bexley winners of the Kent Super League.

"They have done absolutely amazing," Gary Haslewood, the team’s coach, told News Shopper.

Gary is a teacher at Barnehurst Junior School and he said the girls are dreaming of replicating England's world cup players by becoming future stars.

"Playing football is all they want to do," Gary said. "We went to a presentation in Gillingham and they spotted the pitch and asked could they play on it."

Two of the players have already been snapped up by Charlton Athletic.

The year of success, which involved more than 40 wins, came to an epic conclusion on June 15 at Liverpool FC's academy for the national final.

Fresh off winning the South East of England Championship, the Bexley girls clinched a 2-1 win against Chester in the big game.

Some of the girls had never even played for a club until they were selected for the Bexley Girls District team last July.

The girls go to different schools in Bexley and Gary said they are all now best friends.

Gary and the team are taking inspiration from the women’s World Cup – where England play the USA on Tuesday in the semi-final.

He recalled watching the England Argentina team with his Bexley players in Liverpool.

The teacher also thanked everyone involved in making it a "brilliant" season.

"I just want to thank all the girls and their parents for being so supportive," he said. "From driving up to Gloucester, Woking and then to Liverpool."

The team will be formed again this July in the hopes of achieving even more success.
