A man has said school children could have been killed if the van that hit his car before "speeding off" had done so earlier in the morning.

The "hit and run" happened on Crescent Drive towards Petts Wood on Friday at 11.10am when a 62-year-old driver collided with a van at the junction with Shepperton Road.

The man, who asked not to be named in case of repercussions, said his car is a "complete write off".

"I was coming down towards the junction and the next thing I know my car is spinning," he told News Shopper.

"I had gone on the other side of the road and had knocked down a sign. It was very quick. He hit me from the left."

He described being a "little bit shocked" and said his neck has stiffened up and the arthritis in his knees is now affecting him even more.

The London Ambulance Service attended to the man who also reported the incident to police.

He believes the van driver, who he said should stopped to give way, must have been driving around 40 miles an hour.

"The only positive is the time of day it happened," he told News Shopper. "It could have been a lot worse and he must have seen what he done and has no conscience.

"At school time Crescent Drive is very busy with mums and children play on that corner.

"I’m just thankful it wasn’t before nine, I don’t want to think about what could have happened."

The man, who said he was relieved to have escaped relatively unharmed, said it was a bright yellow Ford Transit van that hit his red Mazda mz5.

He added: "The fact that someone can just drive off is beyond me."

A police spokesman said: "Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and the driver of the car was checked over for very minor injuries.

"The incident occurred at the junction between Shepperton Road and Crescent Drive, the driver of the yellow van failed to stop at the scene.

"Police enquiries to trace the van driver continue.

"Anyone with information or dash cam footage is asked to call police on 101, quoting CAD 3333/28JUN or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
