Greenwich council has been working with the Friends of Oxleas Woods to try and reduce 'man-made' fire damage.

Over the last couple of months, those who look after the ancient woodlands have noticed an increase in the amount of fire burns.

Whether this comes from BBQ's or people not taking their rubbish home, it is having a devastating effect.

Oxleas woods is one of the few remaining areas of ancient deciduous forest in Eltham.

Some parts date back over 8,000 years to the end of the last Ice Age and covers a large area with many important sites, such as Severndroog Castle.

However, the human impact on the woods is threatening it's history and the safety of those who regularly walk through them.

Greenwich council has given this advice:

Do not light fires - This includes BBQ's.

Take your rubbish home - Bottles and glass can easily start fires during hot weather.

Stub it out - Make sure cigarettes are properly extinguished and put the ends in the bin.

Call 999 - If you see a fire, report it to the London Fire Brigade immediately.

Don't attempt to tackle a fire - If it can't be put out with a bucket of water leave the area as quickly as possible.

A spokesman from Friends of Oxleas Woods said: "Have you noticed the fires in Oxleas Woods? You can help by contacting the Shooters Hill Ward councillors and asking them to request priority dousing by Parks & Open Spaces."
