Residents in Greenwich have expressed their confusion after the council cut down a historic tree in Plumstead.
The 250-year-old tree stands on the corner of Wickham Lane and Plumstead High Street, however on May 28 it was felled.
Greenwich resident, Paul Walford said: "This magnificent tree was professionally pollarded around three years ago and has benefited with a resurgence in growth and leaf cover."
The people of Plumstead now wish to know why this action had to be taken.
Paul said that there was little to no notice, nor a residential consultation before they began cutting it down.
Now there is only a stump measuring three metres in circumference and three inches above the roadside railings.
Paul continued: " I have emailed the Council to demand answers, and upon their reply, I am prepared to Crowd Source funding for a legal challenge.
"This tree was 250-year-old and surely protected. Unless the council can prove that the tree was dangerous, they have no cause or reason to fell it, otherwise in the public interest."
Greenwich council has been contacted for comment.
