A humanitarian worker who lived in Telegraph Hill has been remembered as a “pure soul” after he and his girlfriend were killed by kidnappers in Nigeria.

Matthew Danjuma Oguche, 27, and British aid worker Faye Mooney, 29, were shot dead in the attack on the Kajuru Castle holiday resort in April.

He was working as a training assistant for the International NGO Safety Organisation, offering support and advice to other humanitarian workers.

Throughout his career, Nigerian national Matthew took an interest in agriculture and made it his life ambition to help tackle world hunger.

He also founded an organisation called Sesame Africa which provides support to poor women living on farms in Nigeria.

In January of this year, Matthew moved in with Telegraph Hill resident Jessica Ruby for three weeks. He had planned to live in London permanently and take a masters degree when he returned from Nigeria.

After his untimely death, Jessica wrote a touching tribute to Matthew on Facebook in which she said he was “a leader, friend, farmer, rising star, and a pure soul.”

She wrote: “Matthew lived his life devoted to empowering people through agriculture and considered it a privilege to do so.

“Matthew lived his live purposefully every single day; in founding Sesame Africa, a social enterprise, Matthew promised to advocate for modern agriculture and to create awareness of the challenges and solutions to feeding a hungry planet.”

She added: “Matthew proudly and boldly supported his loved ones.”

Jessica shared a fundraiser that has been set up by Faye Mooney’s family to raise money for the Oguches in the wake of their son’s sudden death.

The GoFundMe page has already surpassed its £500 target with a whopping £1,400 raised so far

On the fundraiser, the Mooneys wrote: “Thank you to Matthew’s mother, father, five brothers, and sister for making him the exceptional young man he was for his country, friends, colleagues, and Faye.

“Our thoughts and wishes forever go to the Oguches, as they go through their heartache and try to rebuild themselves after this tragedy.

“May Matthew’s soul rest in peace, endlessly inspiring us.”
