Plans to introduce new recycling charges at Kent rubbish dumps has been met with fierce opposition after petition calling for them to be scrapped garners more than 200 signatures.

The charges, agreed upon by KCC, will see residents having to fork out £4 per bag of soil; £6 per bag of plasterboard; and £2.50 per used tyre as they will no longer be classified as household waste materials.

However, some residents are fighting back against the charges with Cllr Peter Harman of the Swanscombe & Greenhithe Town Council leading the petition calling on KCC to "rethink" their strategy.

"They hope to make £1 million within the first year but this will only lead to more fly-tipping, which is cleaned up by the borough councils.

"It will make no financial sense as the additional costs on council tax of clearing fly-tipping will exceed any income gained.

"I’m all for sensible saving of money, but this one will cost residents more," he said.

Backing this view, Dartford Labour candidate for Swanscombe, Emma Ben Moussa, branded these charges as "ridiculous" and agreed that their introduction will only add to Dartford's already troublesome issue with fly-tipping.

"Maybe it’s worked in other towns in Kent that don’t have the same problems as Dartford but where I live in Swanscombe, we get a lot as it is.

"On a local level, we brought this up at a local meeting before and in our manifesto, we’ve stated we want to tackle fly-tipping for the borough.
