A Catford café that has been backed by a community crowdfunder is set to open today.

The Apple Tree Community Café and Shop will be officially opened by MP Janet Daby at the Goldsmiths Community Centre from 11am until 2pm.

The Centre, which was founded in 1939 and has has recently been restored, will run the café and a charity shop through volunteers.

Among the free and subsidised activities currently on offer at the centre are a gardening project, a social wellbeing project and ballet classes for boys – which aim to tackle gender stereotypes.

Janet Daby, MP for Lewisham East, said: “The Goldsmiths Community Centre to have a Café and Community Shop has been an ambitious plan for many years. I am delighted to see it come to fruition.

“It will be a space that I will use along with so many other neighbours and visitors to our area.”
