WEST Dorset's landscape, wildlife and culture is to be explored during a series of free poetry walks aimed at older people, particularly those with dementia.

Stepping into Nature, led by Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), uses the area's natural and cultural landscape to provide activities and sensory-rich places for older people, including those with dementia, and their carers.

As part of this three-year programme, Jurassic Coast poet-in-residence, Sarah Acton, is hosting free, gentle poetry walks and workshops which aim to connect creativity to nature in Dorset parks and green spaces.

Locations include Bridport Community Orchard and Mountfield.

Sarah says you will find 'community, inspiration and wellbeing by spending a morning thinking about poetry, reflecting on the landscape and writing your own words.'

There will be readings, discussion and brief writing exercises suitable for all ages and abilities.

Though the programme is set up to connect people to local nature for improved well-being, and to encourage older people to find community, creativity and enjoyment outdoors, everyone is welcome to attend.

Stepping into Nature aims to help older people improve psychologically and physically, reduce feelings of social isolation and loneliness, increase motivation and independence through increased provision and information for accessing the natural landscape and increase confidence and life skills.

According to Dorset AONB, there are more than 12, 500 people, aged 65 and above, estimated to have dementia. In addition there are 50,000 unpaid carers.

Walks will take place at:

  • Mountfield, Bridport, April 29 and July 29.

Meet at the main entrance to the gardens in Rax Lane.

  • Bridport Community Orchard, June 4 and September 30.

Meet at the top entrance to the orchard, from South Street, go through the back of St Mary's churchyard.

Walks take place from 10-11.30am and booking is essential for each.
