One of south east London’s most established butchers is opening a second green grocery – this time in Bromley.

Richard Douglas, 46, has worked in butcher shops since he was 13.

He is the owner of Carnivore Foods and made his name six years ago for his 'Carnivore' butchery in Sidcup, which was followed by his 'Herbivore' green grocers.

Last year he fulfilled an ambition to open a butchery in Bromley, and he is now opening a green grocery right next door.

Richard, who initially wanted to have a butchers in Petts Wood until it fell through, eventually welcomed one in Southborough Lane last year.

"The butchers in Bromley has gone absolutely amazingly," Richard told News Shopper.

"It was something which was needed in the area. We had gained a good reputation with our Sidcup branch and word got around quickly and we became very popular."

He hopes Herbivore Bromley, in Southborough Lane, his fourth family shop, will be just as successful as the Sidcup equivalent.

Richard, who has won awards for both his meat and vegetarian and vegan options, said his passion for good food is as strong as ever.

News Shopper:

He said: "When I was unemployed for a while when my boy was ill, I found myself travelling to north London to get the produce I liked.

"I was always prepared to travel for food. People want quality and it is nice to now offer it locally rather than it only being offered in high end areas."

Products for the green grocery will be sourced locally and Richard is also selling whole foods.

He wants Herbivore Bromley to become plastic free and said people can bring their own containers to pick up rice or pasta.

"We are sticklers for getting the right produce and we don’t settle for less," Richard said. "People in Bromley can expect quality and nothing else."

Speaking about his continued love for the job, he added: "I started butchery when I was a young teenager working as a Saturday boy cleaning and doing basic tasks.

"I found a love for it and it stayed with me. It is a hard trade but one you have to love to do."

The green grocers will replace the old convenient store and it is hoped it will be ready in time by mid-May.

Just like in Sidcup, Herbivore Bromley will be located right next to the family run butchers.
