A statement released yesterday by Southeastern read: "We sadly report that a person has been hit by a train this morning.

"The power to the tracks was switched off to allow the emergency services and Network Rail response staff to attend to this tragic incident.

"The lines have now reopened, however as train carriages and crew are not in the correct places to start their next journeys on time it will take some time for services to resume the booked timetable."
