INITIAL designs for what Blackbird Leys will look like in the future could be revealed as early as June.

The long-awaited regeneration of the estate is set to begin in earnest over the coming months with residents being given their first chance to have their say this week.

At least 250 new homes are set to be built as part of the project which will also bring new shops, community facilities and outdoor public space.

Councillor Linda Smith said it would help young people move out of their parents' homes and stay living locally.

She said: "While it is fantastic that this project will deliver new community facilities, public spaces and shops in Blackbird Leys, the main aim is to help address the acute need for new homes in Oxford, including new social rent homes.

"I personally know that there are many young people in Blackbird Leys now who are stuck living with their parents or sofa surfing because they cannot afford to buy or rent a home in Oxford. This project will help address that.”

More than 5,000 surveys have been sent out and drop-in sessions will be held on Saturday from 12pm to 5pm and Tuesday from 4.30pm until 8pm in the Jack Argent Room of the Blackbird Leys Community Centre.

This first stage of consultation will ask residents how they want to be involved in shaping the project - whether it be through public exhibitions, pop-up stalls at bus stops or outside shops, through existing community group meetings, or online.

Future events will allow people to tell the City Council and its partner Catalyst Housing how they use the current facilities and what their priorities are for the regeneration.

It is planned that initial designs will be ready to be displayed at The Leys Festival in June and a planning application will follow next year.

Ian McDermott, chief executive officer at Catalyst, said: “We are committed to working with local people and agencies to develop the new homes and facilities for Blackbird Leys, and want to make sure that these help to meet local needs and priorities."
