Bromley police have warned residents that low life scammers are actively pretending to have a sick hospitalised relative to convince people to hand over cash.

The scammers are working in Bromley and are using car parks outside shops and supermarkets to trick elderly people.

A statement on Bromley police read: "These very plausible persons appear sincere as they sorrowfully explain their car has broken down nearby, and then come up with the story they urgently need to get to hospital to see a dying relative, or pick up a child from school etc.

"They ask for change – usually around £20. You won’t get the money back and their story is bogus. The money is probably helping the fraudster supplied with drugs and alcohol and encourages them to target more vulnerable and elderly residents.

"Please just say no."

Police also said these fraudsters, both men and women, were also door stepping on resident’s homes to try their luck.
