A woman suffering from breast cancer says the clampdown on Blue Badge parking offences has left her feeling harassed.

Anouska Bush, 42, who lives in Bromley town centre, has had a disability parking permit since 2014 after being diagnosed with cancer.

More than 160 prosecutions have been recorded since Bromley Council clamped down on Blue Badge misuse three years ago.

Anouska described being "humiliated" in February when her son arrived home to take her to a hospital appointment and three traffic wardens questioned why he was putting up a Blue Badge in his car.

"He called out to me and I said I was in the bath," Anouska told News Shopper.

"I was told I had to prove it was me, so I wrapped myself in a towel, soaking wet with my bald head, and went out into the freezing cold to show it was my photo on the Blue Badge."

According to the mum, traffic wardens have asked for proof from her or her brother four times in four weeks – always outside her home.

"Surely in this day and age you can have something logged on to a system to say this badge has been checked several times," she said.

The family was again questioned last night when Anouska's son came home from work to take her younger brother Christian to the cinema.

Christian, 28, has been a Blue Badge holder since he was a toddler due to his physical and mental disabilities.

Anouska explained: "It’s humiliating for people that are using it in the correct way. We have to keep proving our disability.

"I can understand it once or twice but not four times. Obviously I would rather not have it, it would be great if I didn't need it."

She added: "I totally get why they want to check for fraudulent purposes.

"I understand there needs to be checks. I have seen so much about the clampdown misuses but from my perspective it’s quite upsetting."

A Bromley Council spokesman said: "We will continue to take a zero tolerance approach to blue badge misuse as this is a serious matter and whilst we have had many compliments, we are open to improving the way we work and clearly would not to cause upset for genuine blue badge holders.

"In certain areas, where there is a higher demand for parking, such as in a town centre location, we will see more blue badge misuse and we do target these areas for this reason.  We have been in contact with this resident to hopefully stop future problems."
