A young woman says she wants to reclaim the area where she has always lived after being the victim of a sexual assault.

The woman, who is in her 20s and will remain anonymous, has left pansy flowers along the Telegraph Hill route of the attack to "make the place a little happier".

News Shopper:

She was walking home from work on Friday evening when she was grabbed near Dennett's Road in Telegraph Hill.

"He grabbed me around my waist at the top of my right glute," she told News Shopper. "He was pulling up my skirt and was trying to rip my tights.

"I fell back on him and I just started screaming."

The white attacker, described as lanky and thin and possibly a teenager, was wearing a scarf over his face and wore gloves.

The victim left Queen’s Road Peckham train station before becoming suspicious about someone following her while walking along Lausanne Road.

The concerned woman waited at a pub in Dennett’s Road where she removed her headphones.

However, when she turned the corner at the junction with Arbuthnot Road the attacker launched himself on her from behind.

She said: "I was screaming, and he ran off and just stood back making eye contact.

"I started screaming at him saying 'you’re a rapist' and he started running. I was screaming for help and nobody came."

The victim said other people were on the street, including a jogger, a parent putting a child in a car and someone with a dog, but nobody stepped forward.

She texted her boyfriend and rang the police just after 6.45pm, who she described as being "amazing".

"They were incredible," she said. "They were there in under five minutes and the operator was gentle, kind, calming and really rational."

The young woman and her boyfriend have been putting up posters and flowers around the area to raise awareness.

She has also contacted local schools about the incident.

"I want to reclaim my home," she said. "I grew up and went to school here. I can’t live in fear. My mum's just bought a house here.

"This is a wonderful place and I won’t let someone take it from me."

A police spokesman said enquiries were ongoing and asked anyone with information to get in touch.

He added: "The suspect is described as white, about 6ft1ins. He was wearing a black hooded coat, black trousers, black shoes, black gloves and he had a black scarf across his face."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting CAD 6496/22MAR or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
