Police have released a photo of a suspect in the tragic case of a murdered seven-year-old boy in Deptford.

Joel Urhie, who lived in Adolphus Street, died in the early hours of August 7 after his house was deliberately set on fire.

His mum and sister escaped the blaze by jumping from the first-floor windows.

Nobody has been charged and police have now launched a fresh appeal for public information.

Cameras at a petrol station three miles from Joel’s home picked up a man filling a can of petrol at the Shell garage in Blackheath around 70 minutes before the arson attack at 3.30am.

The man paid £20 before leaving the garage on a push bike.

He is described as in his 30s or 40s, approximately 5ft 10in, of medium build.

Detective Inspector Alison Cole said: "We are asking for help to identify this individual as we would like to speak to him as part of our ongoing work - if only to eliminate him from our enquiries.

"If you are this man, or you know him, please contact us as soon as possible.

He added: "This terrible arson - one of the most horrific crimes I have seen in over 25 years of policing - claimed the life of an innocent child, a tragic loss his family will never get over, and we desperately need the help of the public to bring justice for Joel's family."

Police are still investigating the method used to kill Joel, but they believe it involved shoving a burning item through the letterbox.
