He was stabbed several times after an argument with visitors and a large knife was left on the scene.

Two "distant" relatives have now been convicted over his death.

Aaron Woolwock, 30, from Lewisham, was found guilty of manslaughter but not guilty of murder.

Kerry Donovan, 29, from Southend-on-Sea, was found guilty of murder.

Detective Sergeant Brian Jones said: "We may never know exactly why Mr Edwards was killed.

"Whatever the motive, this led to the senseless death of a family man of good character in the home where he had lived for over 25 years. His family described him as a 'quiet, non-confrontational man who liked to be at home.'

"Woolcock and Donovan now face the consequences of their actions and I hope their conviction will give some solace to Mr Edwards' family and friends."

After Mr Edwards' death, police searched the scene and recovered a driver’s licence and bank cards in the name of Kerry Donovan.

Police said Donovan was a drug user who often visited Mr Edwards and was in financial difficulty.

Witnesses reported seeing the pair leaving the flat after the argument.

Both will be sentenced on April 18 at the Old Bailey.
