Parents at a secondary school in Chislehurst have raised nearly £6,000 in three weeks to contribute towards new interactive whiteboards.

The five whiteboards, used for maths classes, will cost Bullers Wood School a total of £12,500.

Teacher Sara Lee said: "The response so far has been amazing.

"We want to inspire the next generation of female mathematicians and if we can get to our target we will be able to furnish five of our teaching classrooms with these new interactive boards."

Bullers Wood says more than 1,500 students will benefit from replacing the current "completely out of date and unreliable" whiteboards.

The Promethean whiteboards are designed to make complex topics easier to grasp and to enable teachers to capture and record each step of a problem.

Each one costs £2,500 and the school initially hoped to buy at least two, before the fundraising page took off.

Sara added: "Girls can be brilliant mathematicians but they don’t always believe they can.

"We want to expand how we are able to teach maths so that our students can achieve what we know they are capable of and go on into careers that have excellent maths qualifications as a gateway."

Helen Tricard, one of the members of the parent teacher association, said: "We’d be delighted to hear from any local businesses that would be interesting in supporting this initiative and also hope that anyone interested in supporting the school or girls in STEM will consider contributing."
