A man has been given a life sentence for murder after stabbing another man to death in Deptford.

Dana Powell, 29, of Deptford Church Street, was yesterday convicted of the murder of Shevaun Sorrell.

Today he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 25 years to serve.

Mr Sorrell, 22, was found suffering from stab injuries after emergency services were called to Creek Street at 11.45pm on August 25 last year.

Sadly, Mr Sorrell died in hospital a short time later.

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as a stab wound to the chest.

News Shopper:

Powell was arrested on August 30.

After pleading not guilty to murder, he went on trial at the Old Bailey and was convicted after eight days by a majority jury.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Norman said: “Despite his plea of not guilty, Powell faced overwhelming evidence that he was responsible for the death of Shevaun Sorrell.

“I hope that Shevaun’s loved ones gain a measure of comfort from today’s sentence.”
