A Downham woman is picking up dog poo throughout Bromley in the hopes of one day seeing stools become fuel.

Amelia Smewing, 30, says she has found a gap in the market by offering an "invaluable" poop scoop service that turns turds into profit.

She set up Lady Mucks Pet Waste Management last year, which clears public and private land of dog poo.

Amelia, a dog walker and pet sitter, felt compelled to tackle the issue because of the amount of waste being left to rot and stink up Bromley.

According to Amelia, Kings Meadow park in Burnt Ash Lane is referred to as "dog poo park" by residents.

"It’s just horrendous," she added. "It’s literally a landmine of poo."

She also said it gets carried into her niece and nephew’s primary school in Downham because "nobody is cleaning it up outside".

"It is so bad there. It is being put onto carpets and kids are sitting on it."

However, Amelia believes her company is the solution, with its catchline being 'We're number one for number twos'.

The UK produces 1,000 tonnes of dog waste every day and scientists are investigating how to turn it into energy.

Amelia said failing to remove dog poo can be a safeguarding issue.

In extreme cases, she said people can go blind, women can miscarriage and it can cause vomiting and diarrhoea.

Whether it’s streets, parks, wedding venues or schools, Amelia will clean up the mess.

How do people react when Amelia tells them what she does?

"Some say 'oh that’s horrible' and 'nobody wants to do that'. But that’s the point. It’s a gap in the market."

She added: "Nobody else is doing it. Everyone I’ve spoken to thinks it’s a good idea."

Her business offers discounts for service dogs, be it ex-army, guides or autistic pets.

"People don’t know this service exists," she said. "If you’re looking for a window cleaner you know what to do but nobody is looking for a pooper scooper.

"We are trying to spread the word, there is no dog poo fairy but maybe we are the dog poo fairy."

Bromley Council says dog-waste bins are available in the borough’s parks.

Owners who fail to pick up their pet’s poo could be fined up to £1,000.

Amelia said: "Poo bags are so cheap and there’s no excuse for it. It goes everywhere into people’s houses and cars."

However, she is now willing to do the dirty work for everyone and anyone, including disabled people, pregnant women, a family organising a big barbecue or for those who just don’t like doing it.

All waste Amelia collects is taken to a dump and she uses specialised disinfectant on every job.

Her long-term ambition is to see the collected waste go towards producing fuel for cities.
