A man was arrested in Barnehurst last night after he crashed his car in an attempt to flee the scene of an alleged assault.

Officers were called to a pub in Barnehurst Road shortly after 9pm to reports of an assault.

However the suspect, a man in his 40's, had driven off from the scene while intoxicated when he later crashed into a bollard in Merewood Road.

According to a Met spokeswoman, the suspect was arrested on suspicion grievous bodily harm, driving while unfit through drink and drugs, criminal damage, aggravated taking and driving away and failing to appear at court for a separate matter.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution before being transferred to a south London police station where he remains in custody.

The assault victim, another man in his 40's, was taken to a south London hospital where he was treated for head injuries but they are not believed to be life-threatening or changing.

According to posts on social media, it is believed the car involved was a BMW.
