The much-anticipated arrival of Bullers Wood for Boys in Chislehurst has moved a step closer as plans are submitted for a temporary school.

Proposals for Bullers Wood School for Boys at St Hughes’ playing field in Bickley Road were approved in 2017, before a controversial backtrack after traffic concerns were raised.

Parents packed into Bromley Civic Centre last year for a planning appeal as the council defended its U-turn.

The inspector overruled the council to the delight of campaigners – praised by Bob Neill MP for their tireless efforts – who had filled the Civic Centre for the week-long debate.

Now, months after the school was given the green light, a planning application for a temporary school on the new site has been submitted to planners at Bromley Council to allow the second year of pupils to start attending.

The ‘Say Yes to Bullers Wood’ Campaign has been quick to muster support for the plans, with 90 letters being filed to the council at the time of writing.

One supporter wrote: “A school that is very much wanted and needed by the community, fought for and respectfully won for the families that support our borough. The temporary build is the answer to getting the first and second year intake settled on their new ground and temporary home.”

However, despite support from some ward councillors and MP Mr Neill, not everyone has backed the plans – with neighbours continuing to be concerned about road safety.

One submitted: “So much has been said about the road safety of this scheme, particularly for the children entering from the narrow Chislehurst Road side, yet it seems to fall on deaf ears.

“Those organising and rallying support for this application may sadly regret the results of their actions should any serious accidents occur, which we hope will never be the case.”

Another said: “The proposed development would have a negative impact on the environment, especially neighbouring residential area. This is in terms of traffic, noise, air pollution and privacy of this quiet/private roads. The existing resources and facilities will be surely adversely affected.”

Bullers is currently at a temporary home in Westmoreland Road.

The school said in a planning statement: “The temporary block was originally due to accommodate 180 pupils and associated staff from September 2018 for the first year whilst the main school building was being constructed.

“However, due to the ongoing delays to the permanent scheme and the urgent need to provide pupil places from September 2018, an alternative temporary site was identified in the borough to accommodate the first intake of pupils.

“A three-storey temporary prefabricated building will be placed on the main southern car park until proposed school building has completed construction, to accommodate pupils and associated staff.”

Westmoreland Road is the proposed home of the Shaw Academy, which itself was subject to a planning inquiry last year as well.

The fresh plans for Bullers Wood’s temporary site will be considered by planners, with no decision made yet.
