Beckenham youngsters are preparing for one of the biggest amateur productions ever to hit the borough.

Langley Park School for Boys is hosting Disney’s Beauty and the Beast musical after securing the rights last year.

Jon Vickery, head of drama, said: "It is a bit mental."

The first show, where 120 of the students will perform, is in the school’s sold-out 480-seat theatre tonight (February 7) in South Eden Park Road.

More than £16,000 was spent on the production and the school’s theatre was the first in the UK to be granted Disney's rights since the 2017 film starring Emma Watson.

Mr Vickery explained how much work the students have put into the show.

"They have been rehearsing five hours after school every week since December," he said.

"They are buzzing. I am so proud of them. Some of these students hold down jobs, are doing A-levels and they are dedicating so much to something they love."

Most of the lead roles are drama students, but anyone at the school was welcomed, including those with special needs.

A preview was performed yesterday (February 6) in front of hundreds of primary school pupils.

Mr Vickery said: "The students are feeling a real buzz and energy. They are so well rehearsed.

"They are desperate for an audience and getting a standing ovation yesterday was really cool, they needed that.

"Keeping energy levels up for 16 and 17-year-olds is really hard, they were absolutely knackered. But the performance was received really well."

Another sold-out show is being held tomorrow, but there are limited tickets still available for Saturday afternoon and evening.

The drama teacher added: "You can expect glitz and glamour, and all the bells and whistles of a Disney production."
