A body has been found in the lake of a university campus in the search for a missing student from Sutton, according to police.

Daniel Williams, 19, is a computer science undergraduate at the University of Reading who has not been seen since midnight on Thursday (January 31) last week.

Thames Valley Police said the body was discovered on the morning of February 5 in a lake on the university's Whiteknights Campus.

Formal identification is yet to take place, at the time of publishing, however, his family has been informed of the latest development in the search for Mr Williams.

Superintendent Stan Gilmour, Local Policing Area Commander for Reading, said: “Tragically officers searching for Daniel have located a body. While the identity of the person who died is yet to be established, we have informed Daniel’s family and are providing support to them.

“Please could I make an appeal to respect the privacy of Daniel’s family at what must be a deeply difficult time for them.”

The death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.

FROM EARLIER: Daniel Williams: Police ramp up search for missing uni student from Sutton

It comes as police said they had deployed “significant resources” into finding the missing second-year university student, who was last seen on a night out at Reading University's Whiteknights Campus.

He was thought to have been seen at its 3Sixty student union bar before disappearing.

Efforts to find him included members of the Berkshire Lowland Search and Rescue, which works in partnership with Thames Valley Police, combing through large areas.

Friends of Mr Williams and other university students held a vigil for him on Monday (February 4) where he was last seen, while detectives conducted comprehensive enquiries.

This included house-to-house visits, open countryside searches and building checks.

Following the latest development, Reading University said: “We are very sad to share the news that officers searching the campus have found a body.

“We don't have any further details but we will continue to work with Thames Valley Police on the investigation, and with Reading University's student services to support our community.”

University activities continued that day, however, students were encouraged to seek support from available networks.
