Police have said that extradition proceedings will begin "inmediately" for speedboat killer Jack Shepherd police have said.

Shepherd has been at large since July last year when he was convicted over the death of 24-year-old Welling woman Charlotte Brown.

Her father, Graham Brown, wrote on Facebook: "Just been informed that Jack Shepherd has been arrested in Georgia. Justice for Charlotte is close."

Mr Brown cried after learning of Shepherd's arrest.

Speaking to BBC Five Live on Wednesday, he said: "It's just an overwhelming sense of emotion.

"The call has just come out of the blue following the visit to the Home Secretary yesterday and crikey it's just so overwhelming, such a sense of relief really.

"I always felt that he would be [in custody one day] but I didn't quite expect it to be today.

"It's really really good news though, but I'm not sure at the moment whether he handed himself in or if he was arrested, but it does appear that he is in custody and will now be returning to the UK to serve his sentence."

Mr Brown added that the arrest would help to bring closure to his family. He said: "The pain never goes away, I just think after time teaches you how to deal with it better.

"I do think that the family will feel in a much better position to deal with our loss and better deal with the heartbreak that we've suffered over the last three years."

When asked about his feelings towards Mr Shepherd, Mr Brown called him "a very crass, reckless man", who managed to abscond and "stick two fingers up at the judiciary".

"He's got to come back to atone for all that and I think that he's done the right thing.

"It's been quite hard over the last three years."

Mr Brown said he was grateful for the attention and support Charlotte's case has received.

He said: "I would like to take this and say an overwhelming thank you to everybody who's supported the family.

"The press have been very, very, supportive and very good to us, so a big thank you. And to my own MP and Sajid Javid. I just can't thank everybody enough.

"She [Charlotte] was the most heartwarming, beautiful soul, full of laughter and full of joy.

"She didn't deserve this. It's just such an overwhelming tragedy and it's just left a heartbreaking gap in everyone's lives who knew her. She is sorely missed."
