Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich was on "lockdown" after a man entered carrying a gun.
Police were called to the hospital in Stadium Road at 3.35pm on Monday (January 21).
Armed officers attended but the suspect left prior to the police arriving.
However, he was quickly located nearby.
Police say a 44-year-old man was found with a handgun and was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm.
He was apparently accompanying a patient to the hospital.
No threats were made and no one was hurt.
The arrested man remains in custody, police said.
People on social media have been praising the staff for their quick thinking and for acting so calmly.
