A Sidcup man is one of the first people charged in Kent with a new offence of assault against emergency workers.

David Barwick, 28, of Longlands Road, was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer in West Malling on January 13.

He has been bailed to appear before Sevenoaks Magistrates’ Court on February 19.

Barwick joins five others recently charged with the new offence under the Assaults on Emergency Workers Act 2018.

The act, which came into force last November, creates a new offence for those who assault members of emergency services, including police officers, paramedics and nurses.

It also provides tougher sentencing powers for judges.
