A new job club opening in Brockley this month is going to be "huge" for the area.

This is according to its manager Andy Coombe, who is looking forward to opening on Monday (January 18) to hopefully change lives.

The centre will run from St Peter’s Church in Brockley with the help of Christians Against Poverty.

"I think it is going to be huge," Andy told News Shopper. "We need to alleviate poverty because it is now bigger than ever."

Andy has lived in Brockley for 18 years and he said gentrification has failed to ease the levels of "real deprivation" in some areas of Lewisham.

He added that debt was also a huge problem, and he explained why the job club will be a welcome addition.

"People will benefit from a really supportive community and first-class state-of-the-art training in seeking jobs.

"They will also benefit from one-to-one coaching."

He said 38 per cent of Job Club members secure employment through the course.

The job club is free of charge and will open on Monday evenings from 6.30pm.

Andy said people can just show up on the night to receive the employment training and support.
