Another massive tower in Greenwich is set to be approved by councillors next week.

Councillors pushed back making a decision on the major scheme before Christmas, asking to visit the site before having their say.

Notting Hill Genesis has proposed demolishing a skip storage site to build 145 houses on the banks of the creek at Saxon Wharf in Norman Road.

The developer has also included shops, restaurants and bars, and plans to extend the Deptford Creek River Walk.

The area is dominated by high-rise buildings, and if this scheme gets the green light as expected it will be built near enough opposite to a 23-storey tower over the water.

The block would be close to the listed Ha’ Penny Hatch bridge, and overlook the award-winning Laban dance centre.

Following the visit to the site, officers have recommended again that the homes be built.

“Greenwich is one of the locations for strategic development and the focus for the majority of development in the borough, as set out by the local plan,” officers said.

“Deptford Creek and Greenwich Creekside is an area that is already undergoing significant change.

“Whilst it is recognised that the development would result in significant increase in building height along Norman Road, this is not considered to be out of character with the wider context of the area.

“Furthermore the application would result in public benefits that are considered to outweigh any harm on the setting of the grade II listed building.”

Of the 145 proposed homes, little over 48 per cent would be affordable – with a total of 35 London affordable rented units and 35 intermediate units.

The scheme was revised after conversations with the Greater London Authority.

The majority of flats would be two-bed, with a mix of 50 one-bed and 23 three-bedroom homes.

Councillors are expected to give the project the nod at a meeting next Wednesday, January 23.
