Spirits were high in Thamesmead last night after residents managed to fight off a motorbike thief using "eggs and mugs".

Fiona Lee, 35, filmed people scrambling to remove the would-be thief from the bike, which they succeeded in doing before the man fled on foot.

Ms Lee said she was indoors her flat on the 12th floor at around 9.30pm when she heard a lot of commotion coming from downstairs.

When she looked out the window, she saw someone trying to free the bike from where it was chained up.

After attracting attention to himself from the chiselling, other residents of the Tilehurst Point and Staplehurst Point blocks began "chucking eggs and mugs" at him to try and prevent his getaway.

"Nobody was willing to approach the danger at first because we're aware of knife crime in the area but anything anyone had on their coffee table was getting chucked out at him.

"At one point, a plant pot was thrown at him as well," she said.
However, as the video shows, a number of residents soon left their homes in order to foil the crook.

According to Ms Lee, one of the residents was an elderly man with disabilities.

She went on to explain that after thwarting the suspect's attempts, residents were in a celebratory mood as she branded it a win for the community.

"In the 12 years I’ve been here I’ve seen so many changes with the developments and such.

"It really put everyone in a good mood to be honest," she said.
