A law firm has offered advice to employees who may be affected by snow this Christmas.

This comes after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning to parts of the UK this weekend.

Can you skip work if your child’s school is closed?

According to law firm Nelsons, you can take a "reasonable amount of emergency" time off work if there is unexpected disruption.

However, it is expected that this time is spent finding alternative arrangements for the child's care.

They did stress that some employers were more flexible on this, so it all depends on how well you get on with your boss.

Does work have to pay me if I can’t make it due to bad weather?

No. In general, it is not the employer’s responsibility to get you to and from work.

Some may allow you to request late annual leave or to work from home. Despite potentially not being paid, no employer is allowed to force you to travel to work if it’s not safe.

Do I still get paid if my workplace closes for the day because of bad weather?

Yes. Unless you are on a zero hours contract, you should expect your usual pay if work closes because of snow.

However, there is always the risk the boss will ask you to work form home if feasible.

Is my employer liable if I fall on snow or ice at work?

A Nelsons spokesman said: "Employers are required to maintain safe working conditions for employees so they may be liable if there is an accident at work which could have been avoided."

Is there a minimum workplace temperature that must be met?

No, although employers should maintain a safe working environment. In general, it is recommended the minimum temperature for office jobs should be 16C. For physical work, the minimum recommended temperature is 13C.

What happens if your workplace shuts while you are on annual leave?

You could claim holiday back if others are given the day back. However, if people are expected to work from home your chances are slim. This one depends on the employer’s policy of what is expected when the business is shut.
