A heartbreaking video giving a bleak insight into families in Lewisham who will be homeless this Christmas has been released.

Four families, who have lived in a single-room hostel for at least two years, shared their grim experiences in a video produced by Lewisham Homes and the borough's council.

One grandmother held back tears as she spoke about living with her two adult daughters.

She said: "They’re seeing me deteriorate. My depression is really bad since I’ve been here. Some days I don’t even want to get dressed.

"I don't want to see no one."

The grandmother later said: "My hope for the future is, I just want my own place with my own front door so I can settle down again."

More than 2,000 families in Lewisham will be homeless Christmas, as mentioned in the video.

A struggling single mum forced to sleep in the same bed as her son spoke of the cramped environment and having to queue for the bathroom.

She said: "My bedroom and my living area is all as one so I sleep in the bed next to my son.

"It could be upwards of 15 to 20 people trying to get in the bathroom at once in the morning."

Lewisham Council has promised to deliver 1,000 social homes in the next three years to help deal with the housing crisis.

This comes after £37.7 million was secured from the Greater London Authority.

Councillor Paul Bell, Lewisham's cabinet member for housing, said homelessness was a "top priority" and promised more homes, which people in Lewisham "so desperately need".

No faces or identities were revealed in the video.

Margaret Dodwell, CEO of Lewisham Homes, added: "This video serves as a timely reminder of the extent of the homelessness problem in Lewisham.

"It is why, as the London Borough of Lewisham’s housing partner, we’re determined to work with the council to provide the homes our residents need."
