A West Wickham dad says he was "freaked out" after finding what he claims was a dead cockroach in a packet of Lidl grapes.

Roy Lim bought the grapes on Sunday (December 9) at the supermarket in Summit House before washing them and feeding his four-year-old son.

He told News Shopper how later in the day he rinsed them again before finding the cockroach.

"It wasn’t alive," he told News Shopper. "I could just see its legs.

"If it was a caterpillar or something it would have been less concerning. But cockroaches are considered vermin, the same as rats."

A complaint was immediately made to Lidl which is investigating and has said it is "disappointed" standards were not met.

Mr Lim added: "I am hoping my son is fine because I gave him the grapes at the top and the cockroach was at the bottom.

"This has put us off Lidl. They have good food and good prices, but we are weighing up our options.

"It is a concern, we have been shopping there so long and it would be a pain to change."

A Lidl spokesman said: "We were very sorry to hear of this matter, as it is never our intention for a customer to be dissatisfied in any way.

"Following initial contact from the customer, the case was immediately escalated to our quality assurance team, who are investigating the matter with the supplier.

"At Lidl, we pride ourselves on having thorough procedures in place to ensure that our fresh fruit and vegetables are of the highest possible quality for our customers.

"We are, therefore, disappointed that these expected high standards have not been met on this occasion.

"Upon conclusion of the investigation, we will update the customer on our findings and any next steps."
