Emergency works are currently being carried out after a 15 inch sewer collapsed in Erith this week.

Thames Water have partially closed off one lane of Avenue Road so that works may be carried out safely.

Works began yesterday (December 6) but are expected to continue until just a few days before Christmas.

A Thames Water spokesman said: "We’re currently fixing a collapsed sewer in Avenue Road, to prevent any flooding or pollution to nearby homes and the environment.

"We’re sorry for any disruption this work is causing but it’s crucial emergency work, and we’ll have everything back to normal as soon as possible."

A spokeswoman for the council has said that Thames Water are responsible for the site and any expected works and that any enquiries should be put to them.

One social media user on the Erith/North Heath News & Gossip Facebook page noted that it appeared as though the ground "was sinking", while another user mentioned a diversion on the B12 bus route.
