Newspapers are often filled with stories about crime, natural disasters and depressing news - and News Shopper is no exception.

But it’s not entirely clear whether that’s down to the nature of news or actual proof the world is becoming unliveable.

Of course, News Shopper often covers warm and uplifting stories and we like to shine a spotlight on those stories too.

Here are some of the best, most inspiring news stories from last week.

1. James Brokenshire tells building owners to pay for cladding removal

News Shopper:

Old Bexley and Sidcup MP James Brokenshire is demanding owners of private residential tower blocks to remove dangerous combustible, Grenfell-style cladding.

A ban on using combustible cladding on new high-rise homes - as well as schools, care homes and student accommodation - will come into force on December 21.

The ban covers all combustible materials on the external walls of new blocks of flats above 18 metres, as well as new hospitals, care homes, boarding school dormitories, student accommodation and Government-built schools above the same height.

2.  The Horse and Groom donates soup and bread to homeless charity

News Shopper:

The Horse and Groom in Wilmington is donating over 50 litres of soup and sides of bread loaves, to the Urban Table project this weekend.

Manager of the pub, Paul Giles, said he was inspired to lend a helping hand as it's important to give back to the local community where and when you can.

3. London knife crime: Bromley bucks capital's upward trend

News Shopper:

Superintendent Craig Knight from the Met Police said stabbings and blade attacks in Bromley are rarer than the rest of London.

Violent crime in general has gone down in the borough, despite a London-wide gangs and serious violence epidemic.

Supt Knight told a safer partnerships meeting: “Knife crime in Bromley has seen a 17 per cent decrease in the last 12 months.

“Across London there has been something like a 7.9 per cent increase, in some place closer to 40. Overall, these are good numbers and good figures.”

4. You can now donate to the homeless with your contactless card

News Shopper:

The 8,000 people sleeping rough in London this winter will benefit from a new contactless card scheme.

This will allow you to use your contactless payment card to donate £3 to help tackle homelessness.

90 contactless points will be placed in cafes, cinemas, bars and hotels across the city and profits will be split between 22 homeless charities.

5. Drivers could get cheaper car insurance if they go on cycling awareness course

News Shopper:

Motorists could be offered cheaper insurance if they go on a cycling awareness course under new plans from the Government.

 The Bikeability cycle training course could see insurance companies offering discounts to drivers and motorcyclists as part of a campaign to tackle dangerous driving.

6. Chokha in Beckenham wins award for being best new Indian restaurant

Chokha, in Bromley Road, took home the best newcomer trophy at this year's International Indian Chef Awards.

Shaf Rahman, who works for Chokha, said: "We opened the restaurant because we felt Beckenham was missing a fine dining experience which we feel people deserve.

"We would like to thank everybody including guests, friends and suppliers who made it possible for us to win this award and we hope to create many more memories with you all soon."
