Tis the season for giving, and one pub is going that extra mile to help fill some empty bellies this Christmas.

The Horse and Groom in Wilmington is kindly donating over 50 litres of soup, along with a hefty side of bread loaves, to the Urban Table project this weekend.

Alan Courtney, 53, volunteers at the shelter every second Sunday and said that he had approached his local pub to see if they had anything spare to donate, but was pleasantly surprised at hearing the pub's generous offer.

"We get a few hundred people looking for food so to receive this will make a huge difference to the shelter," he said.

Manager of the pub, Paul Giles, said he was inspired to lend a helping hand as it's important to give back to the local community where and when you can.

"He's (Mr Courtney) a local person who comes to the pub. You know, we want to help.

"Whatever we can do to give back to the community and help as best we can," he said.

Urban Table has been running for over 10 years and offers those in need a chance to get a hot meal and some emotional support in Clapton east London.

It can be found every Sunday at 2.30pm in The Round Chapel building in Powerscroft Road.
