A couple turning a vacant cab office into a micropub are asking for suggestions of what to name the new Hither Green boozer.

Math Morrison and his girlfriend Emma Cole say they had to wait 20 months for Lewisham Council to approve their application.

“It was a lot longer than anticipated,” Math told News Shopper.

“It would have been two years of my life I couldn’t have got back if they said no. But the hard works starts now.”

The micropub will be based in Springbank Road and Math believes being the only boozer in the area will bring vibrancy to Hither Green.

Math, who lives in Lee and grew up in Eltham, said: “It is quite a sad and bleak area now. We will be so close to Hither Green station and there is no reason we can’t make it vibrant again.

“We want to create something community-based. There is nothing for people to do here.”

Mathbrew was the name of the boozer on the planning application, which Math acknowledged to be a “terrible pun” used for a laugh.

A new name is now being sought, and the couple want the community to chip in with suggestions.

“I’m not precious about inventing the name,” Math said. “This isn't a vanity project. Let’s have some fun. I wanna see if people can come up with some interesting ideas.

“There is no theme, it can be anything, something fun, something historical, something educational, it is a blank sheet.

“We have had lots of ideas but nothing has felt right yet, so why not open it up to everyone.”

People can send their suggestions to math@mathbrew.com.

Math, who is a freelance public relations worker, said he wanted to control his own destiny by running a pub.

“I speak to people every day and I’m just a bit of a chatterbox really. I know a lot about beer and ultimately I want to boost our area and be my own boss,” he added.

He advised Hither Green residents to be part of the journey by following his blog Mathbrew.com where he is documenting each stage of the development.

Lewisham Council voted unanimously in favour of the micropub on November 15.
