A young golfer from Orpington has been called up to train with the England's Women's Squad this winter.

Gabrielle Shacklady, 14, is also set to represent the SW Region next summer. She currently plays with the Surrey Girls Junior Team who recently lifted the County Trophy

Gabrielle's success stems from her ongoing commitment and passion for the game. She practises for 45 minutes each morning before school as well as on the weekends where she plays for hours on end.

She initially became interested in the sport when her father began bringing her to his matches at a young age. Now, her father accompanies her instead.

Acting Head of PE at Wilmington Grammar School for Girls, which Gabrielle attends, Mrs Laura Iles said: “We couldn’t be more pleased for Gabrielle, she is a lovely young lady who puts 100% into all that she does.

"We are proud of all of our students’ sporting successes, we have many students who take part in sporting activities and competitions out of school hours and feel the benefits and enjoyment that participation in sport can bring”

The school's Head Teacher, Mrs Sue Hunt described Gabrielle as a "model student" and is a "joy to have in school."

"We are exceptionally proud of her golfing achievements and enjoy sharing her success with the wider school community," she said.

Speaking on the good news, Gabrielle explains that she will continue to push forward to become one of the top players in the world.

"I am passionate about playing golf and am working hard on the golf course and at school to achieve my dream of securing a scholarship in the USA and to become the best in the world," she said.

Research conducted by the National Golf Foundation (NGF) shows that only 24 percent of golfers who play on a course are women.
