A Croydon man who wrestled with one police officer while his accomplice fly-kicked another has been arrested and charged.

Shortly before 8pm on Saturday, November 17, two police constables stopped a vehicle on Kingswood Road, Merton.

Martin Payne, of Brighton Road, ran off with the vehicle's other two occupants, but was tackled and dragged to the floor.

The two men returned and began assaulting the officers as they grappled with Payne.

One fly-kicked the female constable in the chest, causing her to fall backwards into the road and nearly be hit by an oncoming bus.

With additional support from a motorcyclist, the officers managed to securely detain Payne, however the others  escaped.

Both constables were taken to a west London hospital and subsequently discharged.

The female sustained head injuries and the male suffered cuts.

Payne was charged with assault causing GBH and assault on an emergency services worker in addition to driving without insurance and without a licence.

He will appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 19 November.

The other two men remain at large.
