A Bexleyheath volunteer has been celebrated as an everyday hero for her work helping others.

Angela Rubens was one of the stars in a photography exhibition to mark the Royal Voluntary Service’s 80th anniversary.

Her picture was taken by celebrity photography Nicky Johnston who travelled across Britain to capture the spirit of volunteering today and to photograph a selection of RVS volunteers who gift their time to help others in their community.

Angela, who is 67, has been volunteering with the Bexley Home Library Service for five years, delivering books and company to those who are unable to get to their local library.

Each month, Angela and other volunteers visit clients with a new selection of books chosen according to the readers’ interests.

Angela was photographed as she delivered books to client Cathy Richardson,

Her portrait went on display in the The Gift of Time exhibition held at the Oxo Tower on London’s Southbank.

Angela said: “I really enjoy volunteering with the Bexley Home Library service. I get to meet many interesting people to whom we can bring the beautiful gift of the written word, which they may have been missing.

“Being involved is really rewarding and we are looking for new people to volunteer with us.

“Having my photograph taken by Nicky was quite an experience and I hope people will be inspired by what we do.”

The exhibition is over but the photos can still be viewed online at www.80years.org.uk
